Abstract

A relatively new concept in personality research that may influence well-being, quiet ego is a self-identity rooted in balance and growth that is nurtured through four facets: detached awareness, inclusive identity, perspective taking, and growth-mindedness. Quiet Ego Scale (QES) measures quiet ego. Higher quiet ego levels are indicated to be beneficial, however, it is important to further establish the validity of QES and to do so in different populations in order to provide more empirical evidence that higher quiet ego levels are indeed adaptive to well-being. This study investigated the validity of the QES in two samples of Malaysian young adults. QES was hypothesised to have three types of validity, namely face validity, convergent validity, and discriminant validity, including when tested against self-compassion, mindfulness, self-esteem, subjective happiness, life satisfaction, and perceived stress. Using convenience sampling, 10 Malaysians were recruited for a QES survey, while 311 Malaysian young adults were recruited to complete a survey that included the QES and six other scales. In the first survey, participants identified QES as measuring aspects of self and agreed with quiet ego definition. In the second survey, QES positively correlated with self-compassion, mindfulness, self-esteem, subjective happiness, and life satisfaction. QES negatively correlated with perceived stress. This study seems to show encouraging results towards the validity of quiet ego as measured by the QES in a Malaysian setting. Additional findings regarding the QES that provide suggestions for future studies are also discussed.
