Abstract

E-commerce is emerging and growing in all kinds of businesses and industries over the world, the construction industry is also adopting e-commerce. This research focuses on the adoption of business-to-business kind of e-commerce in the construction industry focusing on three countries which are Singapore, Australia and United Kingdom. As part of the research, Hilti, a multinational company production tools for the construction industry is used as a case study to look into how the customers of this company are adopting e-commerce based on current facts on how these three countries are performing. Also, this research uses the Diffusion of Innovation theory to understand the factors that explain the rate of adoption and how or if these factors are influencing the adoption. Other internal and external factors of companies such as the organizational factor, technological factor digital readiness and more are looked into to understand their influence as well when it comes to adoption of ecommerce. The two main objectives of this research are to investigate the influence of DOI model with other external factors in influencing the adoption of e-commerce systems and to measure the outcomes of the motivational and barrier factors that influence the adoption of e-commerce systems identify the motivational and barrier factors that influence the adoption of e-commerce systems and to investigate the digital usage level of selected countries based on secondary data Analysis. Data collection is done through interviews as well as by distribution questions after which the data will be analyzed using SAS enterprise guide and by using structural equation modeling. The findings of this research provide more information of the factors that really influence adoption of e-commerce in the construction industry of the three countries. Hilti as a company is able to use this information to change the way they are currently doing e-commerce to fit the different countries. This research also adds to all the existing literature on e-commerce adoption.
