Abstract

This study explored the phenomenon of Corporate Citizenship from multiple stakeholder perspectives, with particular focus upon students, employees and customers, motivated by society moving away from being a passive counterpart of the corporation and becoming a more active participant. The study attempted to reconceptualise and develop a measurement instrument to capture Perceived Corporate Citizenship. The stakeholder typology paradigms are used to construct this measurement instrument, comprising of normative typology (how the world should be) and the descriptive typology (how the world is). A case study of Sunway Group was used, allowing the company to remain fixed whilst multiple stakeholder groups were interrogated. Concept mapping, which is an integrative mixed method approach, is used to bring the stakeholders thoughts together. Concept mapping involves five steps; create statements, sort statements, multi-dimensional scaling of sorted statements, cluster analysis, and label clusters. The qualitative stage was conducted using multiple stakeholders perspectives totalling 43 respondents. An open-ended questionnaire was distributed generating a list of 101 statements. This list of statements was then ‘sorted and rated’ by a further 49 respondents. The findings suggest as the domain of Corporate Citizenship is expanded other CSR theories became evident, such as; Corporate Sustainability and Creating Shared Value. The findings further suggest there is a convergence of stakeholder perceptions of the elements which are considered to fulfil good Corporate Citizenry, however the relative importance of components varies between stakeholder groups. The statement list generated was further validated and refined, consisting of exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory composite analysis involving 1001 participants in order to develop the measurement instrument. This instrument consisted of nineteen statements and divides into five factors, namely; Environmental Oriented, Philanthropic Oriented, Products & Services, Legal & Ethical Responsibilities, and Community Development. Together, these studies provide evidence of the psychometric soundness of Perceived Corporate Citizenship for stakeholder evaluation of Sunway Group. The implications of the study are discussed, such as the study has taken the initial steps in operationalising Corporate Citizenship which is still dominantly in the conceptual domain within the literature.
